If you plan on moving to a new home, moving heavy appliances can be a challenging obstacle. However, with some planning and help from family and friends, moving a refrigerator can be done safely and easily. If you follow these easy 4 steps then you will find yourself happy in your new home with good food chilling in the fridge.
1. Remove the Food & Take out the Shelves
It’s necessary that you start preparing your refrigerator at least 2 days before you move. The defrosting and cleanup can take up to 48 hours. So please plan ahead.
Start by removing all food from the fridge and the freezer. Next, remove any shelves, compartments, trays, or any other items. Then pack and label them carefully in a separate box to prevent anything from rattling around while you are moving the fridge that could cause damage.
2. Unplug and Defrost
Once the refrigerator is empty, locate the plug behind the fridge and unplug it. Wrap it carefully and tape it securely against the fridge. From this point on, it will take about 7 to 8 hours for the freezer to defrost so give yourself plenty of time. The best time would be to do it at night. This way in the morning you can wipe down the water with a towel.
3. Secure the Doors and Place it on a Dolly
To secure the refrigerator doors, use rope or moving straps. Place them around the fridge to secure the doors shut. It’s important that the doors are secured correctly, so they won’t open up while you are moving the appliance.
Once the refrigerator is secured, you can load it on the dolly. Pull the fridge away from the wall and slide the dolly underneath. Depending on how your fridge is shaped, you may have to lift it in order to slide the dolly. If this is the case, make sure to lift slowly.
4. Lean and Move
Once the fridge is on the dolly make sure to secure it using the dolly straps. Before you start moving the appliance, make sure there is a clear path between the refrigerator and the truck. Also, don’t forget to pull out the truck ramp before you start moving the refrigerator.
With your foot on the bottom of the dolly, slowly & gently lean the fridge back (make sure you have an extra hand to help you). Once it’s positioned, slowly start moving the fridge out of your house and onto the truck.
When loading the refrigerator on the truck, walk backwards up the ramp with you in front and the refrigerator afterwards. It’s recommended that one or two more people help you push and guide it up the ramp.
Once the fridge in the truck, use the straps to secure the fridge into the back of the truck by placing one strap across the top of the fridge, and wrapping one around it from side to side. Keep in mind that you should always transport the refrigerator standing upright, never on its side or facing down.
After you’ve safely moved the refrigerator to your new home, plug it in and let it chill for 72 hours before filling it with groceries.
