Orlando Movers
A piano is such a heavy but delicate musical instrument that there are many moving companies that specialize in just moving them. However if you can get marshal enough manpower anyone can move a piano. Read our 5 steps to moving a piano so you know how to protect your musical instrument while moving to Orlando.
Identify What Kind Of Piano You Have.
There are three kinds of pianos that are found in homes today, Spinet, Upright, and Grand.
Spinet pianos are the most common and the smallest. Due to ingenious engineering this kind of piano is shorter than average, usually no taller than 3 feet. Their width is average for pianos at just under 5 feet. While their weight clocks in at around 300 pounds.
Upright pianos are less common and are a more difficult to move. The reason for this is that upright pianos are at least 4 feet tall. This causes the piano to have a high center of gravity. Making the top just as heavy as the bottom, meaning this piano cannot be placed on its side.
The last but the most iconic of all pianos is the grand piano. You will easily recognize these from any concert or most movies where a lounge lizard is playing away with the lid open and projecting sound across the room. These pianos are normally huge where floor space is concerned. The smallest grand pianos can take up 3 yards of space. As a result there are very few of these in residential homes in Orlando. Depending the size it can weigh from 500lbs to 1000lbs.
Map Out Your Path.
The first thing you’ll want to do is walk through the house and plan out how you will move the piano.
• Measure your piano and the pathway out of the house to make sure that it will fit.
• As you walk though out the house make sure to move any and all furniture. You don’t want someone to get tripped up or knock anything over.
• A good rule of thumb when moving a heavy item is to have one person per one hundred pounds.
• Make sure that everyone is wearing thick leather shoes, preferably steel tip. This is protect feet should the piano slip and fall
• Moving a grand piano will mean putting it on its side so you will want to make sure that your doorways can accommodate that height.
Prepare The Piano.
For the all three kinds of pianos you will want to lock the keyboard lid down and wrap the piano in blankets. Use mover’s tape to secure the blankets around the piano. This will prevent damage to the finish. The upright and grand pianos will require a wide dolly to move (most moving truck companies can rent you one.) The spinet doesn’t need one. You can move it easily by just lifting it.
Moving the Piano.
When moving the Spinet use at least 2 people at both ends and lift the piano and move it carefully making sure to stop every few feet to rest and reset the grip.
The upright piano will require several people to carefully lift it while two people place the wide dolly underneath. Afterwards make sure to have everyone slowly push the dolly along the path you planned, until getting to the truck, which will require everyone again.
The grand piano will be the trickiest one to move. They have large sturdy legs, which means they will have to be carefully removed after placing the piano on its side upon the dolly. After that you will need as man people as possible to help when moving it through out the house and onto the truck.
