Bring A Camera
Looks can be deceiving so make sure you bring your camera to document the rental before you move in. Camera are the easiest way to document any problems with your new apartment. Make sure to bring your smart phone and take pictures of anything that might be trouble. Cracks in the wall, broken tile, if you think you could be charged for it then it is worth taking a picture of it.
Get a Copy of The Power Bill
If you want to know how much it will cost to live there in total. Then make sure you call up the power company and give them the address. They will tell you what was paid for the power for the past couple of months. You will want to have all the information you need when making a decision on where to live.
Get Reviews
Go online and look for reviews of the building online. Avoid the rants and look for reviews that are thoughtful and address the building pro’s and con’s. Usually past tenants can give you a good view of the management and what to expect from the staff.
Tour your Actual Unit
When you go to look at apartment make sure to see an actual unit and not a model. If you can see if you can tour their available units. Keep your nose ready and make sure you don’t smell signs of fire or pets.
Read the Lease
This might seem obvious at first but you would be surprised the number of people that do not sit down and read what they are signing. Ask for a copy of the lease grab a highlighter and sit on the sofa. Don’t just skim over it. Make sure to read all of the fine print and ask the landlord any question that come up.
