10 Things To Do After Moving In

Local Orlando Moving Companies

So you have made it to your new house safe and sound. You’re excited and ready to start a new chapter in your life but before you can do anything else make your new house a home.

Take look at our checklist to get yourself started at your new home.

1. Unpack and Inspect

You still have that moving inventory we advised you to make in our other article, right? Pull that out and start unpacking. Make sure you check everything off and circle everything you don’t find.

After the movers leave make sure to inspect the boxes and the items in case anything was damaged or broken. If you do find damage make sure to document it right away, take picture if you can. Trustworthy and honest movers will make sure to address the issue right away. Talk with the movers and see if they left anything on the truck.

2. Connect Your Utilities

Connecting your utilities was something that you should have arranged before the move but if you forgot no worries. You should do that right away. The first thing you’ll want to connect is the water and the power. Depending on where you moved to you will need to get your gas connect as well. Last but not least don’t forget to get your Internet and cable working as well.

3. Get Your Essentials Unpacked

Moving and unpacking can really zap your energy so make sure the first thing you unpack is your bedroom and bathroom.  No matter how far you get with unpacking you will want to make sure that you have your bed ready when you collapse for the day. Not to mention you will want to get into the shower and clean all that sweat off of you.

4. Inspect Your New Home

After you get yourself situated you will want to bust out your camera and magnify glass and walk through out your house. Make sure that you inspect every inch of your new home for damage especially water and fire damage.

A neat little trick is to take a look at the water meter before you leave the house for a long time then check it again when you come back. If you’re sure you haven’t used anything that requires water while you were out the meter should not have changed. If it has then you know that you have a leak.

5. Change The Locks and Check Security

Change all of the locks in the home so you are sure that no one else but family has a key. Check and make sure all of your smoke alarms have fresh batteries. Install a fire extinguisher if you don’t have one already. Inspect all the windows in your for security. Make sure you know where your closest hospital is. If you think you need it call a company to have a security system installed.

6. Connect Your Major Appliances

Refrigerators are huge appliances that need to be moved and treated carefully. Once you have your refrigerator in its final spot you will need to wait for at least 3 hours before plugging it in. The reason for this is that the oil inside it has been swished around on the move and needs time to drain back into the compressor, the heart of the fridge. Turning it on prematurely could cost you with an expensive repair.

7. Finish Unpacking

Well by now you have unpacked your bedroom and bathroom but you’re not finished yet. One technique you can try is to invite over your friends and family to help you unpack. You will definitely have to furnish them with a few pizzas but who wouldn’t love being around your friends once everything else is finished.

8. Clean Your House

Since you have just moved in and you are still trying to decide where to put everything why not take advantage of the situation and clean the house. Once you are all unpacked there is sure to be dirt, dust, and grime everywhere.  Go down to the local store, pick up some cleaning supplies and get to work.

9. Change Your Address

If you haven’t forwarded your mail from the last home to your new one then your first priority should be to get over to the post office. You should also take this opportunity to notified your family, friends, banks, credit card  and insurance companies. You will want to make sure that bills and family letters find their way to your new home in a timely manner.

10. Register Your Car

Moving to a new state means that you will need to register your car. Most states give you a window of 10 days. So as soon as you can visit your local DMV and register your vehicle. You will need some form of ID and proof of insurance. While your down there register yourself to vote as well.
